Case study: YHES House

22 March 2024

YHES House is proud to work with young people to help them reconnect with their communities and make changes in their lives that lead to a more positive future. Recently the service worked with a 14-year-old girl who was using drugs, disengaged from school and estranged from her family and couch surfing between family and friends.

Working collaboratively with a reengagement officer, a support plan was developed which helped the young person gain enrolment into alternative education, secure accommodation and create and distribute a resume to potential employers. During the 2-year support period additional supports were provided including court support, emotional support and a collaborative support plan with the Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) following a decline in her mental health.

YHES House sourced and provided financial and practical assistance through food supplies, a Go Card to assist with independent transport and transport, and emotional and advocacy support to attend schooling and medical appointments. Support was provided to extended family members to enable them to access outreach Centrelink services and support with caring for their grandchild, ensuring she had a stable and safe home environment.

It was pleasing to see how this young person responded to this support. She actively engaged in education, attending school regularly with the view of completing her Year 12. She has successfully attained casual employment with an improvement in her mental health and wellbeing since having secure housing and regular attendance at school and work.

On turning 16 years of age, she successfully made a claim to be financially supported through government assistance enhancing her capacity for financial sustainability and viability in a stable and secure home environment. This has been a wonderful outcome for this young person who has been empowered to take control of her life and steer it in a positive direction.
